So....I know everyone is all pissed off about skinheads getting a bad reputation because of the racist skins, and all I have to say is this: Because of the way I look (and others on here, I'm sure), people make a judgment that I'm a satan-worshiper or a drug addict or whatever....I weigh out my options: either stop dressing the way I do, or suck it up and deal with it. Unfortunately, someone's always going to give a group of people a bad name. Whether they want to be or not, all the other skins are GOING to be associated with the "few bad apples"...that's life, it happens. It sucks. But it's a CHOICE to dress the way you do or act the way you do and you either DEAL with the fact that the rest of the world is stupid and is going to judge you unfairly, or you change into what the rest of the world thinks you should be. I'm pretty sure most skins know well that they will be associated with the racist skinheads, they are aware of what they are getting into ahead of time...It certainly doesn't make sense to me to be shocked and upset about it. The world is full of bullshit like that. It's like when some Catholic priests got caught molesting kids, and all of a sudden a lot of the world sees all priests as child molesters. Just because a few of them are, doesn't mean they all are....but that's what the world sees and the world is good at making snap judgments like that. That's my two cents.

I think that it's a lot better to educate people than just "deal with it."
This thread seems more like a "here, I'm just trying to set this all straight, not all skinheads are racist" thread than a "OOooooooh my god i'm soooo upset that people think i'm a naziiii" thread. Is it okay that people think you're a drug addict or a satan worshipper? not really. so why wouldn't you want to like, prove them wrong or explain that you aren't one? People who think that all skinheads are racist assholes just don't know anything about skinheads, so why not give them information?

oh i get the left wing stuff (my daddy is a skin, lefty as fuck but just sees himself as a SHARP), it was more the tone assosiated with them that i dont understand, but im scottish and we're a really socialist country more so than the rest of the uk even and i never really *get* why people look down on it is all.

I was happy to read this. I think it is good to be educated about all types of people. I get so annoyed by people who learn about a group of people via movies that are completely inaccurate or messed up news sources or just word of ignorant mouth and think they know everything about everything.
It sucks to identify with a group and have the name tainted because of a select few assholes. I don't know who said that every subculture gets their image twisted around because of what people have learned through crappy inaccurate sources, but I don't see the deal with sitting back and not caring that people assume ridiculous shit about you just because they're misinformed. I say its better to try to educate than let people just assume the worst about you.

I don't know a lot of skinheads, but the ones I do know are really nice people. Not people you want to mess with. I'm not close friends with them, but friendly. One of my friend's "big brother" is a skin head and he always says how adorable I am because I've got a short fuse...hehe. But so does he.
Also, there was a mathteacher at my highschool who's husband was a skinhead. He was really awesome to talk to.

Cool thread, I've only heard of 'Nazi Skinheads' before this. I don't know any skins IRL, but I do hate when stereotypes get started.

Kinda like how people think that punks hate goths and vice versa, total BS.

There are many stereotypes about the goth/ic sub-culture as well and I get so tired of having to re-educate people. But better to educate them than to let them think all the negative stuff is true.

Here in Brazil when the firsts skins apeared in the 80's, they had no ideia of what really was/is the whole 69 thing, and some of them became nazis or our version of nazis, the carecas (in portuguese means baldheads), wich they say are not nazis, but very nacionalists and dont like, punks, tradicional skins, homosexuals or imigrants (this seems really nazi to me). Its not unusual to see news about someone killed by skinheads (nazis or carecas) around here.
Lucky for me, here in my city there aint many skins. There are some trad skins, personaly I have nothing against them. but everytime I see one in the street I dont get very happy, in my opinion they only damage the scene, i've seen many trad skins became nazis or carecas or acting like assholes, so I rather live in a city without them.

But I respect the hole 69 culture, I even have the George Marshall's Skinhead Bibble here. And also like Oi, early reggae, ska, etc. Just dont like skins because its a mather of surviving on the streets around here.
